CubeCold, a leading service provider in temperature-controlled food logistics, faced challenges in controlling energy costs across their extensive network of cold stores and freezers. With more than 20 branches spread across multiple countries, getting an overview and insight into energy consumption is a complex task.

Benchmarking energy consumption

A big wish from Cube Cold was to be able to benchmark energy consumption across all sites and industry averages. With a comprehensive overview and insight into energy consumption, deviations from expected (usage) patterns, malfunctioning devices and savings options can be identified. How do the Dutch branches relate to each other, but also to the Belgian and Italian ones?

Real-time insight into thanks to the Energy Monitoring System

Qing's consultants worked with CubeCold to develop a measurement plan. The focus was on identifying the largest energy consumers. This includes compressors, pumps and fans.

By means of sensors and monitoring equipment, energy consumption at machine level was measured and visualized thanks to a dashboard. This gives CubeCold real-time insight into their energy use.

From complex data analysis to savings options

The Energy Monitoring System provides valuable data. This data is only valuable if you also do something with it.

However, the interpretation of this data is complex and requires a great deal of knowledge and skills. That's why CubeCold used Qing's experts to savings opportunities to identify and quantify.

The results were compelling. Thanks to the complex data analysis, the following applications, energy savings, lower maintenance costs and energy costs could be achieved:

  • Cooling and freezing during economical hours
    CubeCold was still operating at peak-trough rates, even though they were already being paid on the hourly market. With the new pricing structure, the company can save 20%.
  • More efficient temperature control
    The temperature settings of freezers were unnecessarily low. For every degree Celsius that they freeze less deeply, CubeCold saves between 5 and 7% energy.
  • Insight into capacities and consumers
    There is now insight into which equipment consumes the most energy, when it is on and which powers are being measured. This promotes the optimization of the control of the cold stores.
  • Optimizing solar power
    More solar power was returned to the grid than necessary. Due to grid congestion, CubeCold is not allowed to deliver back to the grid. Because the cooling demand is synchronized with the solar panels (PV) generation, the company prevents the PV installation from having to be cut off/shortened. In that scenario, all solar power would have been lost.
  • Frequent start/stop of the second compressor
    Compressors are energy intensive and wear out faster with frequent start-stops. Intervening with the control system can prevent this and extend the lifespan.
  • Respond more quickly to electricity market prices
    CubeCold can see how much cooling power is needed to reach certain temperatures and how flexibly this capacity can be adjusted
